Wow! Great scene. On the page, it's just words, but River Phoenix is outstanding in pulling out emotions.

This might have been the first straight drama movie I saw in the theater. I'm trying to think if I had seen anything like this before? It was my introduction to how films could slug you with an 'experience' - you felt like you had gone through something when you walked out of the theater. This was one of those films where I still remember the theater where I saw it, and the feeling of the story as it unfolded - all these years later. It's why I still go out to the movies - for that "captive" experience.

And yeah. Such a great scene.

Wow - I just looked at some info about SBM and I didn't realize it was only 87 minutes long!

Love this scene, and it's the one scene that always stuck with me the most, I think because it goes to the core of Chris' character, how he's been labeled "the bad kid" in his small town. They all have that internal struggle. Will Wheaton is the creative one who's overshadowed at home by his dead brother, Cory Feldman is the weird kid with the psycho dad, and Jerry O'Connell is the fat kid that no one takes seriously. I also love the details in Chris' story, like how he admits he took it but then he felt sorry and TRIED TO GIVE IT BACK. Chris is a kid with a bad side who is trying to be better. A lesser writer would have just made it so he never took it and the teacher was evil and set him up for her own gain. Made it black and white. But shades of grey are always more interesting.

P.S. Hey Max, check out my Substack if you get a chance, thanks. 😁
